MUSIC
GEORGIA 2:30 PM
Justin Tripp and Brian Close formed GEORGIA, making music, video and design work. BOMB magazine calls their music “intuitive: it is never obvious, yet somehow seems inevitable. Their latest album, Like Comment, is, perhaps fittingly, an exploration of atmosphere. It’s self-contained and full of incongruous parts—jungle sounds and clacking percussion and deep, bassy tones that overlap and intersect in strange and surprising ways. Signifiers of jazz, funk, noise and house shift tectonically on parallel planes, rarely settling”.
SUN ARAW 4:00 PM
The musical project of the Los Angeles–based artist Cameron Stallones, Sun Araw, previously a member of the band Magic Lantern, has crafted consistently innovative and well-received albums; including a collaboration with Jamaican reggae group the Congos and most recently Gazebo Effect (Sun Ark Records) released in 2015. Supporting every Sun Araw composition is the idea of mantra: how repetition with attention changes the perception of a melodic object. Recent works attempt to affect the mental activity of the listener even more physically and directly by removing a fixed location from which to listen. Sun Araw will be performing at the MoMA this Thursday, August 18, 2016, as part of their Summer Thursday Series, and at the Hester Street Fair this Saturday, August 20, 2016.
WORKSHOPS
JAPANESE SHIBORI INDIGO DYE WORKSHOP W BEEZIE TEXTILES – 12pm, 2pm, 4pm – $20
This Saturday we are highlighting a new vendor and friendly workshopper, Beezie Textiles! Beezie Textiles is a New York based design company that specializes in home goods—primarily wall hangings, quilts and blankets. With a background in farming, designer/creator Barrie Cohen’s biggest thrill is using plants and organic methods to make color stick on fabric. She tries to source as much dye stuff locally as possible and repurposes fabric whenever she can. Each item is handmade and one of a kind. In this workshop, Barrie will teach you two different methods of creating organic indigo dye baths. You will also learn traditional Japanese folding techniques that create beautiful patterns and designs on fabric called Shibori. Some fabric & white tshirts will be provided but please feel free to bring some of your own articles as well!
WHIMSICAL LANTERN MAKING w WORKSHOPS ESSAYER – 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm – $20
